Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin can often be confused with dry skin.

Whilst dehydrated skin can also be dry, the two conditions have very different causes. When the skin is lacking in oil, it is dry, whereas dehydrated skin is lacking in moisture.

The top layer of the skin, also known as the stratum corneum, is the layer that protects the skin. It is this layer that is affected by a lack of moisture, also causing the skin to become itchy and dull.

As well as decreased moisture levels, dehydrated skin can be caused by environmental factors, diet, incorrect product use, lifestyle habits and make-up. Moisture can be extracted from the skin when exposed to the sun, wind, central heating and air-conditioning; with dried out skin being caused by alcohol, caffeine, lack of sleep, poor diet and even excessive sweating.

When affected by dehydration, the skin can become dull and itchy, causing conditions such as: dark circles, sunken eyes, shadowing around the nose and under the eyes and lines and wrinkles.

Keeping the body well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids everyday, can help to maintain healthy levels of moisture both within the skin and body, and the amount that one should drink can depend on the individual – with between 1 and 2 litres being recommended.

PPP Laser Clinic has a variety of treatments that, along with other conditions, can help with adding moisture to the skin. There are also a range of skin care products that can be used at home to give dehydrated skin a boost, producing a youthful and glowing look.
