The production of too much Melanin is known as Hyperpigmentation and will cause the skin to appear darker. This can be caused by ageing, sun exposure or injury to the skin. Melasma, freckles and age spots are common examples of Hyperpigmentation, often appearing as localised patches that cover a small area of the skin. Melasma is a common skin condition which can cause darker patches of discolouration on the skin. However, when the skin appears lighter, this is Hypopigmentation and the cause is down to not enough Melanin being produced. This type of pigmentation can be inherited, but may also be a result of trauma to the skin, and will often cover a much larger area of the face and body.

The size of the patches that develop can vary greatly in size, and if they are significantly large, the affected person may find it difficult to cover.
